The top note of “Buenos Aires” opens with a fruity freshness, enhanced by Paraguayan petitgrain and grape. The heart of the fragrance reveals the ceibo flower – the national flower of Argentina, adding a soft floral elegance. Its combination with yerba maté lends the fragrance a grassy, slightly smoky depth that is reminiscent of the traditional Argentinian mate tea ritual. The base rounds off the fragrance experience with a warm, velvety intensity: leather and the nutty, woody facets of tonka bean merge with the sweet opulence of dulce de leche, a homage to the famous Argentinean sweets.

Created by perfumer Karine Chevallier, “Buenos Aires” brings to life Gallivant founder Nick Steward’s memories of his first trips to the Argentinian capital in the 1990s. Inspired by the smoky aromas of asados, the scent of leather and a hint of eau de cologne in the air, the fragrance tells of glamorous nights, elegant boulevards, conversations in charming cafés and the sweet temptations of dulce de leche and alfajores.

The new fragrance is available in bottle sizes of 30 and 100 ml.

The Gallivant philosophy: A Symbiosis of Craftsmanship and Authenticity

Gallivant was founded in 2018 by Nick Steward, an award-winning independent perfumer from London. After his time at L’Artisan Parfumeur, he wanted to create fragrances that were both luxurious and accessible. Each of the British label’s creations – from “Berlin” to “Istanbul” and “Los Angeles” – invites you to discover the atmosphere and character of a city olfactorily.

Nick Steward

At the heart of Gallivant lies a commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and authenticity.  A special expression of this philosophy: Nick had advertising images made of paper designed for many of his perfumes. Instead of relying on AI, he stays true to traditional craftsmanship, which for him conveys personality and individuality.

In an interview with Parfumo, Nick shares insights into his creative process, the magic of “Buenos Aires” and the values that characterise Gallivant’s approach to the art of perfumery.

What makes Buenos Aires such a captivating city for you?

Nick: There’s a sense of romance about the place. There’s a lot of physical beauty, for example in the architecture (it’s often referred to as the ‘Paris of South America’), but there’s also that Latin American sense of style and ‘good living’. And most of all, it’s the locals (called porteños) – and their joie de vivre. I’d say Buenos Aires is one of the world’s ‘great’ cities.

What were the most exciting and challenging parts of working with Karine Chevallier on “Buenos Aires”?

Nick: Karine (who is an independent perfumer based in Paris) and I have known each other since I was at L’Artisan Parfumeur – so we have a long working relationship and a long friendship. Can I let you in on a little secret? Karine is very funny – and I love friends with a sense of humour. We’ve worked together on some of our Gallivant bestsellers, such as “Berlin”, “Istanbul” and “Los Angeles”.

The Gallivant Studio

The collaborative development process is always very fluid – a lot of back and forth – often spontaneous and freewheeling. I want the creative development to be fun and playful for us, to feel like a new adventure (& I hope our customers feel this pleasure when they wear our perfumes).

A lot of the fun of working on “Buenos Aires” was talking about the epicurean pleasures of the place (for example, the alfajores – the delicious biscuit/cake – that led us to the tonka idea. ) The challenge then was to take some simple references from our mood board (food, wine), but also to create a perfume that was very classic, timeless and sophisticated.

We’re not fans of ‘trends’ or gimmicks – and I really want our perfumes to smell unique and not like anything else we’ve seen before.

What emotions or memories do you hope wearers will experience when they wear “Buenos Aires”?

Nick: With all of our fragrances, I hope the wearer feels the sense of escapism that perfume, art, music and literature can bring. Perfume has this magical power to transport us to another place… That’s why I like our perfumes to have a kind of dreamy, dream-like quality. And I think “Buenos Aires” is also a very cosy, comforting scent – I think that’s one of the reasons why it’s so popular.

Slow perfume is a central theme at Gallivant. What does this approach mean to you?

Nick: For me, this means being thoughtful and considerate in everything we do. When I start a new development project, I deliberately do not set a deadline for completion. Let’s start the journey together… And see where it takes us over time. Some of our formulas take years to develop! “Los Angeles”, for example, was over 4 years of creative composition.

And even our production process is slow – because it’s done in an authentic artisanal style – by hand, by people. “Buenos Aires” is a slow production because we do a very long maceration.
Time is the biggest luxury and the devil is in the details!

Your decision to use handcrafted paper art for advertising instead of digital or AI-driven methods is remarkable. What inspired you to take this route, and how does it connect to the values of Gallivant as a brand?

Nick: I love making things – to see the ‘fruits of my labour’, to see a physical product at the end of the process… It gives me a lot of joy and satisfaction. And as the world gets faster and more digital, I want to go against the tide and go slower, appreciate the little things, the simple pleasures, and do things in a very human, artisanal way.
