Point blank: Summer is my least favorite season for fashion. I struggle to find shorts I like on my 5-foot frame, so I’ve been opting for comfy dresses that work for casual outings in recent years—after all, it doesn’t get much better than a one-and-done outfit. Many of my favorites are midi length, so my goal is to add shorter styles that keep me cool in scorching temps while flattering my petite-curvy figure. During a Target run this past weekend, I found the perfect one for just $15, and I already know it will be my most-worn article of clothing this summer.
As a shopping editor, I spend several hours on Target’s site every week looking for must-buy fashion finds. That said, I knew the retailer had been on its A game with summer dresses this season, so I needed to check out the clothing section in person at my local store. I stumbled on this $15 mini dress from A New Day, which I surprisingly hadn’t come across online, and went straight to the fitting rooms to try it on. The second I slipped it on I was obsessed, so I bought it in both black and brown for a total of just $30. I see that sizes are already selling out in some colors, including white and pink, so I recommend getting your hands on it ASAP.

The A New Day Muscle Tank Mini Knit Dress looks and feels even better in person. Thanks to its blend of cotton, polyester, and spandex, the material is thick, stretchy, and doesn’t cling to my body whatsoever. I’m not a fan of tight, form-fitting dresses and have a hard time finding short styles that don’t resemble my cheap bodycon dresses from college (IYKYK) or aren’t too formal. This one nails a relaxed fit ideal for many occasions: casual enough for no-makeup errand days and classy enough to style with accessories and sandals for date night.
It’s also the perfect length. The dress hits above my knees, so it doesn’t look awkwardly long or concerningly short (I confirmed this by doing the sit-down and bend-over test). I also love the high neckline that provides a nice contrast to necklace stacks and wide tank sleeves to easily hide bra straps.
Target shoppers also praised the mini dress by A New Day, including many petite women like myself. One 5-foot-4-inch-tall reviewer called it the “perfect dress for any event,” adding that it’s “very well made” and “the length is perfect,” while a 5-foot-tall customer shared that it’s “very flattering.” Others say it’s “super comfy” and a “great basic staple” for your summer wardrobe. Some recommend sizing down if you want it to be more fitted, but I went with my usual size because I liked the relaxed look.
