Even her closest friends had no idea.

When news broke last week that Kate Middleton was recovering from abdominal surgery, the world was shocked, with the news seemingly coming out of nowhere even though statements from Buckingham Palace explained that the procedure was “planned” and had nothing at all to do with cancer. Today, People reports that even Kate’s closest friends and family had no idea that she was going to the hospital.

"Within their broader circle of family friends, there had been no indication that anything was wrong, and the carefully guarded news about Kate’s situation came as a surprise even to those who work closely with the royal family," the publication writes. Just a few weeks prior to her operation, Kate had been attending to her usual royal duties, like the royal Christmas walk that included her husband, Prince William, and their children, Charlotte, Louis, and George. People adds that during the holiday season, Kate had hosted friends and family at Anmer Hall just as she would have normally.

According to various statements from Buckingham Palace, the Princess of Wales could be hospitalized for “10 to 14 days" before she continues to recover at home. For fans hoping to see Kate soon, the palace noted that she would probably not “return to public duties until after Easter.”

“It is sensible to take the time,” a source close to the royals shared. “That is a great example to the rest of us, as you’re often told to get back to work as soon as possible, which can be damaging."

Sources also note that Kate will have a strong support system when she arrives at home. Kate's parents, Carole and Michael, and siblings Pippa and James are close enough to see her and help out.

“Her parents are an enduring factor in the upbringing of their grandchildren,” an insider added. “And they will be a reassuring presence when she goes back to Windsor to recuperate.”

“She is in great hands and will have lots of care and support at home," a second insider shared.
