There have been more than a few nights out when the bar a friend swore was “only a few blocks” away suddenly became a mile-long excursion. After 12 minutes and “still a little more to go,” I start to regret my decision to wear heels, but Brooke Shields just reminded me that there’s a practical solution to my problem that doesn’t require me to sacrifice style.
The model and actress stepped out in New York City ahead of her Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen appearance in a body-hugging, low-cut silver dress that felt worthy of a Bravo reunion episode. The sexy dress sparkled under camera flashes, which was only enhanced by her pair of equally shiny metallic silver heels that — to my surprise — weren’t on her feet.
She carried the shoes in hand, like an accessory. And while we have, in fact, seen a single pump as a purse on the red carpet before, this wasn’t the case here. Shields was doing the smart thing: getting in her steps in comfy pink pointed-toe ballet flats from Rothy’s — a brand Meghan Markle wears — before slipping into her heels.

Packable ballet flats have long been a fashion girl staple; you put them in your purse so that when you need to go from one place to another, you don’t have to do so in ankle-breaking heels. And while I have been aware of the hack, Shields is the first to convince me that it’s worth trying, because even if she ditched the heels altogether, her outfit would still look great.
By reaching for a pair of highlighter-pink ballet flats, Shield’s amplified the playfulness of her sparkling look. The flats didn’t detract from her outfit, but instead, they added to it. And though ballet flats are far from new, this was the first time I’d seen them look so glamorous — and honestly, I loved it! Plus, as someone who owns shoes from Rothy’s, I know that those were probably the most cushioned, supported steps she took all day.
