Angelina Jolie has delivered yet another masterclass in pulling off festive partywear with a touch of elegance. The actress, who stars in this year’s Maria, has seemingly taken some thematic sartorial inspiration from the world of opera in recent months. With a series of chic all-black ensembles. Last week, she wore a long black coat dress with a glamorous fitted waist and full skirt. A week earlier, she donned an effortless black sack dress while attending the 2024 Gotham Awards. Last month, she opted for a black skirt and top combo with a camel coat thrown casually around her shoulders. Back in September, she wore a sophisticated black gown with shoulder cut-outs—paired with opera gloves, naturally. And now, her latest look puts a subtle festive spin on her go-to outfit formula.
Attending a recent screening of Maria in London, the actress donned a black velvet two-piece. The long-sleeved velvet top featured a round scoop neck and billowing sleeves. She paired the top with matching straight leg pants, a matching blazer, and simple black boots. She wore her hair down and straight in a center part and opted against wearing any necklaces or rings. She completed the look with a neutral smokey makeup look and a subtle French manicure.
Jolie stars in Pablo Larrain's film as the renowned opera diva Maria Callas in her final days before her death in 1977. The role has catapulted Jolie straight into this year's awards conversation—as of last week, she has already been nominated for a Golden Globe.
Speaking to People earlier this year, Jolie explained that the role spoke to her on a personal level. “I know there are certain things that people would assume from the distance that we have in common, but I think what we have in common maybe is that we share a certain loneliness in kind of sometimes doing our work where we’re the one, I don’t know, up at night, alone, trying to figure something out,” she said.
Jolie later explained during a conversation with The Sunday Times that her children have helped her keep that loneliness at bay. “I don’t feel that [loneliness] because I have family,” she said. “Maria didn’t have a family, so her work was everything. My work is not everything. Being a parent is everything.”
Jolie also found herself connecting with the music in the film. Describing herself as an “older woman,” she told IndieWire, “There is nothing that meets what you’re feeling like opera. [Some pieces] are so beautiful, so full of hope and so full of yearning. Opera is bigger. It is bigger than we allow ourselves to feel in every moment.”
