So Yujhi, what do you say when people ask you to describe your pieces?

When I upload photos of my work on Instagram, I usually include only the title without any further description. While I want people to interpret the work freely based on their own perspectives, to be honest, I don’t really have much to explain about them.

What drew you to blackwork tattoos and surreal anatomical themes?

Since I first started tattooing, the tattoo market has evolved rapidly, and techniques have advanced significantly. I think general consumers today have a much keener sense of taste and a higher level of discernment compared to before.
To adapt to this, I’ve worked on deepening and solidifying my unique style, which has led me to my current approach. As I focused more on intense, detailed elements, I settled on this anatomical and organic style.

Many of your designs feature intricate spiked elements. What’s the story behind this recurring motif?

One of my design principles is “rules within chaos.” It’s about things that seem repetitive yet slightly different, or things that appear distinct but feel similar—like how a tree’s countless leaves look the same from afar but are all unique up close. I draw this way to give a more realistic feeling to my work.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I have been deeply inspired and influenced by the works of the late Kim Jung-gi since I was young and even to this day.

We know you’re preparing some more trips. Tell us about your plans so more fans around the world know where to find you.

I’m not the type to plan things rigorously, so I can’t say for certain, but in 2025, I plan to guest work in London and Hamburg during January and February. My primary working area will be in Los Angeles and across the U.S.

What’s your creative process like, from brainstorming to completing a tattoo?

I prioritize quality over quantity, so instead of brainstorming sessions, I spend a lot of time imagining designs during my free time or when I’m alone. When an exciting idea or image crosses my mind, I immediately create a draft, discuss it with the client, and proceed with the tattoo. Among all the steps, my favorite and most significant part is the initial process of imagining the design. While it can be frustrating when my mind goes blank, the emotions and experiences I gain when the imagined design becomes a tattoo serve as a major driving force for me as a tattoo artist.

Are there specific challenges when incorporating both organic and mechanical elements into a single design?

Whether it’s organic or mechanical elements, both have clear purposes and reasons for existence. For instance, a car engine is like a human heart, and the camera of an iPhone is like a human eye. I strive to express the essence and functional beauty of these elements as artistically as possible.

What has been your most memorable tattooing experience so far?

The most memorable moment for me was the first time I tattooed a client after starting my career. Compared to now, my passion back then felt much more intense. Whenever I feel tired or hit a slump, I think back to that moment to re-center myself.

Do you have any dream projects or collaborations in mind?

Until now, I’ve expressed my work only in 2D. But if I have the ability and opportunity, I’d like to showcase my work in 3D. Out of the many possibilities, I’m particularly interested in art toys (figures). I’m currently learning the related skills and knowledge needed to pursue this.

Our conversation with Yujhi offered a fascinating glimpse into the mind of an artist who masterfully blends organic and mechanical themes into intricate blackwork tattoos.

Yujhi’s emphasis on “rules within chaos” reflects his unique ability to capture complexity and balance within their designs, creating pieces that resonate deeply with viewers and clients alike.

Drawing inspiration from the legendary Kim Jung-gi and the essence of functional beauty in both natural and mechanical forms, Yujhi’s art transcends traditional tattooing. Their meticulous focus on quality and the process of imagining designs as a creative catalyst underscores their dedication to craftsmanship and innovation.

As they prepare for upcoming guest spots in London and Hamburg in early 2025 and continue their work in Los Angeles, Yujhi remains grounded by the passion and drive they felt during their first tattooing experience. And with aspirations to expand into 3D mediums like art toys, it’s clear their artistic journey is far from over.
