The chin-length haircut draws attention to all your favorite features.
In 2025, A-listers like Gabrielle Union, Ayo Edebiri, Lily Collins, and more are all appearing with closely cropped hair that just grazes the chin. Why the sudden surge? “Chin-length haircuts offer fashionable, timeless, [and] structured looks that make a profound statement,” says hairstylist and curl expert David Reid. “They draw attention to your best features because they rest so closely to the face and on the chin and jawline.” The cut has endless variations, from blunt with bangs, to edgy and asymmetrical, or a sloping inverted shape. Each style can be tailored to highlight your favorite facial features and complement your hair texture.
In considering the cut, be advised that you’ll have to factor in a trim every four to six weeks. “Because chin-length cuts look their best at the chin, they require frequent trims,” Reid explains. “I like to think about a pant hem set just above the ankle when wearing a loafer. After three to five weeks of growth, your hem is past your ankle and gathering on the top of your foot—not a good look.” With that being said, you can always devise a plan with your stylist to help your cut grow gracefully into a long bob, or you opt for an even shorter cut next, like a shaggy pixie.
“Chin-length haircuts are confident and sophisticated—that’s why they’re trending now,” adds celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos. “They strike the perfect balance between edgy and classic.” Let the 35 celebrity examples below serve as proof of the cut’s versatility and timelessness.
Meet the expert
- Dimitris Giannetos is a celebrity hairstylist and colorist whose clients include Megan Fox and Demi Moore. David Reid is a hairstylist who specializes in curly and coily hair.
Voluminous A-Line
Both our pros agree that an A-line cut is a universally flattering choice. The style is especially easy to customize—a sideswept fringe enhances bone structure, rounded layers soften features, and longer pieces in the front elongate the face.
Side Fringe
One of the quickest ways to switch up a chin-length cut is by playing with different parts. A deep side part adds drama, says Giannetos, while a center part will give “a modern and polished look.”
Short and Coiled
Those with coily hair are in luck with this cut, says Reid. “This texture holds all shapes with ease once the cut has been established and detailed. Defining the texture is key; methods like braids and twist-outs can be used to reshape and elongate coils if desired.” To style, he recommends air-drying or using a hooded dryer.
Subtle Flips
Flipping the ends of your hair outwards with a flat iron is an easy and playful way to experiment with this cut. If you keep the length blunt, you’ll also have room to comfortably tuck strands behind one or both ears.
Soft and Rounded
A short haircut doesn’t mean you have to let go of bouncy, voluminous blowouts. Here, Cate Blanchett’s cut is given added oomph with the help of a round brush.
Sleek Side Part
On a round face, “blunt perimeters and side parts create length and balance,” says Reid. He recommends asking your hairstylist for layers that are squared to provide contrast and harmony to your face shape.
Beachy Waves
“Soft, rounded layers add volume and soften sharp features of the jawline and chin,” says Reid. Relaxed waves also help balance a long face shape.
Soft and Sleek
Side-parted micro bangs and a jawline-grazing length are refined on Taylor Russell. To achieve a similarly gleaming finish, top hair with a few drops of shine serum once you finish styling.
Blunt Bangs
According to Reid, a full fringe like this one on Katie Holmes complements oval, oblong, heart, and diamond face shapes. On a diamond-shaped face, “A full fringe or side part with soft face-framing highlights strong cheekbones, while a blunt, textured perimeter and tousled waves create volume.”
Edgy and Asymmetric
All hail hair icon Rihanna: This asymmetrical chin-length haircut still holds a special spot on our styling mood boards. The graduated length and sideswept fringe make it a cheekbone-enhancing option for all face shapes.
Layered and Voluminous
Reid says a square face shape like Nava Mau’s calls for “soft, rounded layers on a textured or round perimeter.” For a similar style with lots of body, apply a volumizing mousse before you blow-dry.
Sophisticated Middle Part
Hailey Bieber’s S-shaped waves exude sophistication and are surprisingly easy to achieve. Simply clamp down on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair with a flat iron, then mist with a shine-enhancing hairspray. “For a quick, effortless, and chic vibe, try tucking one side behind your ear,” says Giannetos.
Full Curls
Bouncy curls like Kerry Washington’s give a chin-length haircut an air of romance. “Big, bloomed curls require moisture, soft hold, and less product layering” than coily styles, says Reid. “Volume can be achieved with long or wide-tooth combs used to lift the root while gently diffusing with medium speed and low heat.”
Subtle Curves
This cut’s rounded shape and sweeping side part frame high cheekbones and give a nod to the 1930s. Swap a plain bobby pin for a more decorative hair clip to tap into this year’s trend of glitz and maximalism.
Lived-In Texture
Keira Knightley’s off-center part and loose waves emphasize her style’s effortlessly cool and tousled vibe. Giannetos recommends using a texture spray “to create movement and prevent the hair from looking flat.”
Shiny and Straight
“Oval faces can pull off basically any style, but a blunt, chin-length bob highlights their facial symmetry naturally and beautifully,” notes Giannetos. A sleek center part will make your eyes the focal point.
Architectural Angles
“Styling is all about maintaining a polished texture that holds the shape and keeps the lines of the cut,” says Reid. “Length, shape, texture, and volume have to be in concert at all times.” Lucy Hale’s architectural bob takes each of the stylist’s points into account.
Bold Bixie
A bixie (that’s a bob and a pixie combined!) emphasizes a defined jawline, while a slide part brings cheekbones into focus. A matte pomade completes thos look by keeping every hair slicked neatly in place.
Jawline-Grazing
Tucking an extra-short cut behind your ears gives off a playful, boyish vibe. Meanwhile, a flyaway-free finish and immaculate center part convey elegance and sophistication.
Smooth Side Part
A deep side part gives Jennifer Hudson’s blunt-cut bob an asymmetrical edge. To keep your parting just as crisp and frizz-free, reach for a styling product.
Air-Dried
“Wavy to coily textures cut at the chin will need detailed customization like layering, blunt lines, graduation, and face-framing to ensure the shape is not bulky or frizzy,” says Reid. Once you’ve mastered the cut, a lightweight curl cream will give your hair hold and definition on days you choose to air-dry.
Blunt Cut
Ayo Edebiri’s blunt cut keeps all the attention on her glowing smile and eye-catching fashion choices. To keep this cut looking its best, you’ll need to schedule monthly trims.
Blunt Bangs
Eyebrow-skimming bangs and loose waves lend the bob French ingénue vibe. To keep bangs looking refreshed, choose a tinted dry shampoo that matches your hair color. As a bonus, a tinted formula makes strands appear fuller.
Golden Waves
Tousled waves and a deep side part allow golden highlights or a sun-kissed balayage to shine. Adding a texturizing paste creates an extra piece-y, edgy effect.
Old Hollywood
For a night out, dress up your chin-length bob with Old Hollywood-inspired pin curls. Simply curl strands with a one-inch barrel, then pin them to your head as they cool before unpinning and setting with hairspray.
Simple and Sleek
A good flat-iron is essential if you want your bob to appear as sleek and stick-straight as Carey Mulligan’s. Not only will the heat tame flyaways, it’s also good for bumping the ends under or out, depending on the look you’re going for.
Layered Waves
“As with curly {hair], debulking, channeling, graduation, and soft layering can help to avoid bulky-looking shapes,” explains Reid. For this look, you’ll want to air-dry or diffuse your waves, switching between hot and cool shots of air to reduce frizz.
Sleek Curls
A combination of hair oil and gel gives curls the hold they need to stay in place without sacrificing shine.
Beaded Braids
If you love the look of beaded braids but aren’t a fan of how heavy they are, consider this short braided style. The cropped length keeps the style lightweight and low-maintenance.
Polished Waves
Saoirse Ronan is ethereal as ever in a blunt cut with a side part. Loose waves frame and add volume to her face shape.
Face-Framing Layers
Face-framing layers carve out Sarah Paulson’s cheekbones and add movement to her cut, while the rounded shape brings softness to her chin and jawline.
Voluminous Side Part
Extra volume at the crown gives Taraji P. Henson’s bob a regal vibe, while a flash of blonde highlights adds edginess. For similar lift at the roots, part your hair to the side opposite your usual and finish with a volumizing spray.
Wet Look
A wet look isn’t just a style statement. Since it calls for plenty of conditioning oil, it nurtures your hair while you’re out and about.
Loose Curls
Pairing short, voluminous curls with a sleek center part dances the line between carefree and clean-girl. A curl cream helps define every ringlet.
Side Part and Soft Curls
For a softer, more romantic look, Edebiri styled her chin-length hair in a deep side part with soft, bouncy curls. This look oozes old Hollywood glamour.
