It’s a beauty editor-approved, failsafe product.

I’m the middle of five children and the only one to have been blessed (or cursed, depending on the day) with curly hair. The gene skipped my parents as well, so figuring out how to deal with my 3B curls was a learning curve for the entire family. There were dozens of products, methods, and tricks tested, and the most reliable of them was Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer Cream. It’s so reliable, in fact, that it has remained my fail-safe frizz-reducing and volume-enhancing hair treatment for the last 20-plus years.

I am not monogamous with any beauty product. It’s counterproductive to my job and against my curious nature. At any given time I have at least a couple of styling products in my rotation — right now it’s Virtue’s Curl Defining Gel and the tail end of the Amal Clooney-used Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer. One or both of them get the job done often, but there are many days when the frizz and lifeless limp of my hair is immune to their charms. Thankfully, Aveda’s curl cream always comes in clutch.

My hot take on hair care products is that they become less efficient the longer you use them and the more your hair gets used to them. This Aveda product is the rare exception to that scientifically baseless rule. The ends of my hair skim the beginning of my cleavage line and I only need a dime-sized dollop to adequately cover my strands from the near-root to the tips.

I apply it to wet hair and do nothing else; I simply leave it down and out of my face—I don’t have to partition it into little clipped sections as I often do with other products. As the air-drying process proceeds, my hair feels weightless and lifted, there is not a hint of frizz insight. It never fails to restore vibrancy and bounce to my hair on its dreariest days. The effect lasts through at least two, if not three, rinses as well, so one tube lasts me upwards of a year.

Head to Nordstrom to shop my hair’s hail mary, the Aveda’s Be Curly Curl Enhancer Cream.
