They might make you retire your boots.
Aside from the shoes I run in, I’ve had a pretty sneaker-less summer. Between comfy sandals, trending flip-flops, and outfit-elevating ballet flats, I haven’t really needed to slip into a heavy, stuffy sneaker. And I’ve been loving these no-socks moments so much, I kind of forgot how close we are to fall, but Katie Holmes’s outfit just served as my much-needed reminder.
The actress tackled a New York City rain shower in a casual-chic look I immediately want to copy for fall. Her raincoat was the highlight of the outfit for me—the water-proof jacket featured a small collar and bright, khaki hue that gave the practical piece an almost trench-like look. And poking out from underneath it was a baby blue hoodie; it’s the cool-girl layering hack everyone from Jennifer Lawrence to Sophie Turner has opted for, and one I will be employing the moment it’s chilly enough to do so.
And while her outerwear has me craving cooler temperatures, it’s her throwback sneakers from Axel Arigato that might have convinced me to retire my sandals early.

Holmes is one of my footwear icons—she’s had me shopping for everything from metallic Mary Janes to fisherman sandals and, of course, Adidas’ always-sold out Sambas. But this week, she traded out those more streamlined styles for a chunky, retro-looking pair of basketball sneakers. The style featured a white base, black details, and a leather-looking exterior. Once again, I was looking for a similar pair.
Her casual sneakers brought a major cool factor to the transitional look. The style falls somewhere between everyday and athletic, giving the sneakers a lot of versatility. Like Holmes, you can wear these with sweatpants and even leggings, but they also look great with jeans (just look at Jennifer Lopez). And while wide-leg trousers might not seem like an obvious pairing, Emily Blunt proved sneakers can make even silky work pants and a stuffy black turtleneck feel surprisingly cool.
As we move from sandal to sneaker season, I’ll be reaching for Holmes’s throwback pair. Shop more sneakers inspired by her style, below.
