As summer turns to fall, tans fade, and sandal sales make way for boots, many people trade in sun-streaked strands for richer, warmer tones. “This fall, creating dimensional hair with lighter sun-kissed tips and a darker root will be trending in a big way,” says celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena. Hairstylist Amanda Capomaccio predicts that “very deep, dark, dimensional brunettes” will be trending, while Dimitris Giannetos says champagne blonde and coppery reddish brown tones will be big.
All of the aforementioned looks can be achieved with balayage, a coloring technique that involves hand-painting highlights into the hair. The technique allows for a bit more nuance than traditional foil highlights and adds dimension without transforming the hair’s color.

Balayage typically preserves the original color of the root, making it low-maintenance and perfect for a subtle seasonal refresh. And though balayage is sometimes used as a shorthand for the brunette-to-blonde gradient popular in the mid-2010s, the technique can accomplish a wide range of looks. It works well on many hair types, though longer hair allows for a more gradual gradient than shorter hair, and finer hair requires more delicate coloring than thicker hair, Mena says.

Dimensional Brunette
Ciara's warm, rich brunette strands come to life with sunkissed pieces framing her face. The subtle balayage adds dimension, highlighting the areas where the light would naturally hit.
Rich Brunette
To take Keleigh Teller's dark chocolate hair to the next level, Giannetos added small highlights near the front, brightening up the area around her face.
Vintage Wood
Giannetos calls Joey King's warm brunette-to-blonde fade "Vintage Wood." He combined highlights and lowlights to achieve the honey-brown shade. "It popped on Joey's complexion and it is one of my favorite colors I’ve ever done on her," Giannetos says.
Subtle Money Pieces
Marianna Hewitt adds depth to her long locks by lightening the pieces surrounding her face. Keeping the roots dark and starting the balayage closer to the eyebrow keeps things extra natural looking. Capomaccio says this look is achieved with "very tiny highlights all over. Keep the ones around the face as bright as possible while toning everything else down just one to two shades lighter than your natural color. The focus here is the pop of bright color in the front!"
Amal Clooney's Glazed Donut Latte Hair
Amal Clooney's famously abundant hair gets added movement and dimension from subtle caramel-colored balayage. The lighter strands start near her chin and grow in number closer to her ends, helping her curls catch the light.
Find Your Light
Zendaya adds dimension to her brunette bob with gold, honey-toned ends.
Sunkissed Strands
Madelyn Cline's sunkissed strands feature dark roots blended seamlessly into brighter pieces around her face. "Her color, cut, and length create the conditions for a seamless transition from summer into fall," says Mena, her stylist.
Deep Roots
Ashley Park added dimension to her long, dark brunnette locks with deeply subtle balayage that catches the light just so.
Subtle Dimension
And Just Like That star Nicole Ari Parker keeps her bob from falling flat with subtle highlights throughout.
Sandy Blond
Capomaccio describes Halle Berry's honey-colored curls as featuring a dark root with sandy blonde tones that come up high and contrast the root only slightly.
Chrissy Teigan
Capomaccio says that Chrissy Tiegan's look features "bold, bright blonde highlights all over with a lot of contrast in between." She notes that leaving enough of the hair untouched and letting the darker tones show through keeps this look from appearing completely blonde at the tips. "You really need to have the depth of your base color showing through to help make the blonde pieces really pop!"
Honey Tones
Capomaccio notes that this look features thicker, though well-blended highlights. "For golden-honey blonde tones that don’t go up too high, the highest highlight would be in front starting around the corner of the eye," says Capomaccio. "Stay away from neutral/ashy toners and keep everything very warm!" Thicker highlights but still very blended."
Beachy Bronde
Gisele Bundchen looks like she's straight off the beach with her sunny bronde beach waves.
Blonde Ends
Here, Simone Biles rocked balayage braids with blonde ends. This approach makes it easy to grow out your hair without being stuck in a bleach-repeat cycle.
Face Framing Highlights with Dark Roots
Rosie Huntington Whitley kept her roots dark but lightened things up around her face with this classic blonde balayage look.
Fade to Black
Gina Rodriguez added warmth to her dark brown hair with a subtle balayage that warms her hair up from a cooler, darker brunette to a more caramel colored shade.
Gentle Fade
J.Lo's gentle fade moves from darker roots with subtle highlights to ends that are completely blonde.
Balayage Bob
Aimee Song proves a straight blunt bob looks even chicer with a touch of balayage, which warms things up and adds natural dimension.
Face-Framing Highlights
Rosanna Zanetti's blonde balayage adds brightness around the face while keeping the rest of the hair closer to its natural color.
