If you’re already wardrobe fatigued this fall, you’re not alone. Lately, every time I sift through my closet, I have a hard time figuring out where to start. With that in mind, I’ve been thinking more about outfit formulas to help me craft an easy (and stylish) fall look.

To help with this endeavor, I consulted costume designer and stylist Negar Ali Kline, who worked on Netflix’s latest rom-com series, Nobody Wants This. Suffice to say, she knows something about building an outfit with “main character energy.”

“Jackets are the hero piece for fall,” Klein tells InStyle. Specifically, she favors “leather and suede options,” adding that jackets are an “investment piece of the season.” If you’re looking for a splurge-worthy jacket, Klein loves this option from French brand Nour Hammour, which she used on Justine Lupe’s character Mogan in Nobody Wants This. For styling tips, Klein says suede and leather jackets “pair well with dresses, mini skirts, and jeans or trousers.”

Klein says another trend she’s gravitating towards is a knit vest. “It’s a great layering piece for underneath jackets with a button-down or on its own and a t-shirt,” she explains. Klein adds, “Joanne wears a vintage navy blue one in episode nine before she meets the parents.” Celebrities such as Martha Stewart are also fans of the sweater vest. As for where to shop for one, Klein says her favorite brands are Guest in Residence and Sandy Liang.

“For denim, I like a wide-leg or barrel silhouette,” says Klein, noting that her go-to brand is AGOLDE. But you can find lots of brands that offer similar styles, including Levi’s and Rolla’. Barrel-leg jeans are also trending amongst celebrities, with Katie Holmes and Julianne Moore putting their own twist on the comfy pants. And, of course,you can never go wrong with classic wide-leg jeans.

While there’s no shortage of comfortable sneakers on Nobody Wants This, from white Converse to Adidas’s Sambas, Klein says she’s “loving” a tall boot right now, pointing out this sleek pair from Loeffler Randall. Also, as an owner of the boots, I have to say that they’re truly worth the splurge. However, fall boot deals are plentiful, with similar styles from Dolce Vita and Dream Pairs. The boots top off any outfit perfectly, but Klein suggests styling them with “a midi skirt and a fitted knit,” which Kristen Bell’s character, Joanne, wears in the series.
